About Paul Martyn

Philosophy

Paul's passion for furniture making is rooted in seeing the natural beauty in wood, then designing and creating a piece of furniture that brings out that beauty. The result is something unique that is both timeless and may be considered a work of art in itself: craftsmanship, not compromised by time or materials. He is available for commissions throughout Cumbria and Lancashire as a traditional craftsman furniture maker.

Tradition

Great importance is placed on the use of hand tools, which leaves a look and feel to a piece of furniture that can't be replicated by mass production. Traditional craftsmanship is combined with the use of modern technology, resulting in a feel of timeless durability.

In this age of mass production it's a pleasure to have an individually designed piece of furniture that feels at home as soon as it arrives.

Craftsmanship

Paul trained at the London College of Furniture,in the East End of London, where he was awarded a diploma in ‘Hand Crafted Furniture Making’. Over the years, he has built up a vast knowledge and understanding covering all aspects of furniture making. Whether a beautiful free standing table or chair or a fitted wardrobe or cupboard, all pieces are treated with the same high level of skill and attention to detail.

Environment

Paul has developed an environmental policy that includes  sourcing new timber from sustainably managed forests that are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) registered. He also enjoys working with re-claimed timbers such as Yellow Pine and Pitch Pine.

Finishes

He likes to use finishes made from natural plant oils and waxes which provide a durable, low maintenance, non-toxic finish. These finishes are micro-porous (allows the wood to breath). The oil/wax finishes do not contain biocides or preservatives and complies with EURO Norm EN 71 (suitable for food surfaces and children’s toys). He also makes his own Bees Wax finishes.
